Classical music where you least expect it

This is the place to talk about "consumer" music, from Classical to 80s Pop to Aboriginal music. Discussions of music theory can go in the Other forum of the Interests category.

Classical music where you least expect it

Post by Mike »

A lot of people have said that their knowledge of opera begins and ends with Bugs Bunny cartoons. But I've been listening to Classical Music For People Who Hate Classical Music and it's amazing how many pieces of Classical music people are familiar with.

The theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey is actually Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zarathustra). I forget the composer at the moment. The music that people associate with Apocalypse Now is actually Ride of the Valkyries from Wagner's The Valkyries. (Both titles are the English translation of the German titles.) Then there's Can Can and the theme from The Lone Ranger. And The Toreadors from Carmen shows up in a lot of movies.

Can anyone else think of some good examples?
In school they called me "nerd". Today they call me "boss".
